Thandie Newton has revealed that she suffered from bulimia for about a year. The star of ‘Pursuit of Happyness’ starved herself from food in order to prevent weight gain and boasts that she has even scars on her knuckles to prove it. As a matter of fact, in extreme cases the disorder can lead to multiple diseases like insomnia, throat cancer, infertility and even paralysis.

The eating disorder makes one so obsessive that he or she gets on to self-induced vomiting, the use of laxatives, dieting, or fasting just for the sake of controlling weight.

Same happened with Newton as her obsession began when she was 14 and was undergoing training for her ballet exams. That point of times the Crash’s wealthy black woman ate nothing except the cottage cheese. Her life in which she faced several abusive relationships added to eating disorder during her 20s.

She recalls her one relationship with much older guy and says that she felt low on her sexual relationship with him. She would also dine with him but would then go back to the flat to puke all that she had with him. Later she dated another fellow who turned out to be emotionally abusive and criticized her at all times.

That was enough for her as that very moment she realized the problem and ended up in seeing a therapist for the first time as she said:

After that first session, I never threw up again. I had made the connection between shame and self abuse.

A close pal of Nicole Kidman, Newton wedded screenwriter Ol Parker in 1998 and currently lives in northwest London with their two daughters: 6-year-old Ripley and 2-year-old Nico.

Now after overcoming the disorder she finds herself a happy, defiant, loving friend when she sees herself in the mirror.
