It’s quite common to observe the familiar faces of David Beckham and his Posh wife Victoria on the covers of the US magazines these days. The 32-year old England international footballer was signed by the MLS side Los Angeles Galaxy in the summer on a 5-year contract worth a reported $250 million and his import into the American world has ushered hope and hype that the most popular sport in the world which the Americans have christened ‘soccer’ could just make its market there. But it seems that everyone is not buying it.
In its October issue, the Radar Magazine in the United States of America has refused to lay to the tunes of the Beckhams by dubbing David Beckham and his snaked-hipped wife as the ‘Most Overhyped people on the planet’ and have the duo’s photo on their cover. The magazine calls Beckham an ‘overpaid soccer star‘ and Victoria as a ‘pointless collection of body parts.’ The magazine is well known for the no nonsense principle that it follows and the view that it has taken of the Beckhams should once again spark the old debate whether big name celebrities such as the Beckhams are really worth it.
The Beckham duo has lead a high profile celebrity lifestyle not at all inferior to those of Hollywood stars. David Beckham has played his European football with two of the top sides in the world, Manchester United and Real Madrid, and won the historic treble-the English Premiership, the English FA Cup and the UEFA Champions League— with Man United in 1999. Last season he was a key performer for Spanish giants Real Madrid as they marched on to win their first La Liga title in 4 years.
Posh Spice Victoria earned her fame as a member of the highly successful British girl band Spice Girls in the mid and late 1990s. After the group split up, Victoria went for a solo career but failed miserably and has since tried her hand at fashion and writing with modest success.
The duo married in July 1999 after two years of courtship and has had three children since. Their fame and fortune have rocketed in the subsequent years and there’s little doubt that along with Brad Pitt-Angelina Jolie, they are the most widely recognized couple in the world. But all the time there has been a suspicion that the duo’s fame cannot be justified. While Victoria Beckham has yet to be given full marks by music critics, most football pundits feel that her husband David is one-trick pony: a free-kick specialist who can deliver some great crosses into the opposition’s penalty box and nothing more.
Beckham has featured in only a handful of games in America and is currently sitting on the sidelines with a knee-injury. The new issue of the Radar magazine is to hit the stand soon and could easily spark off a discussion on whether the Beckhams are losing their ground in the US.
