Naturally, several political cartoonist rushed to put their own spin on the now world famous shoe thrown at President Bush.
Most of them were obvious and unoriginal. But Brazilian freelance cartoonist Carlos Latuff drew the best one due to the fact that it most symbolized Arab public opinion toward Bush.
Latuff is known for his Middle East focused cartoons. Many of his cartoons are, for instance, pro-Palestinian and very critical of Zionism. Although such cartoons are fine, Latuff does have one very dishonorable episode. Latuff took part in the Iranian government sponsored Holocaust Cartoon contest. Although Latuff’s cartoon was not anti-Semitic (judge yourself below) and won second prize, and although most cartoons were fine; there is a proper way to draw connections between 20th century Jewish suffering and Palestinian suffering. Taking part in a Holocaust cartoon contest – particularly one sponsored by the Iranian government – is not the way to do so and is offensive to the victims of the Holocaust. No matter one’s views toward Zionism, one should always show the utmost respect of the victims of the Holocaust and all victims.
