The malaise is deep-rooted. For example, US President Bush has purchased a house in Dallas to live after he quits the office within a few weeks. On the contrary, every former Prime Minister in India is entitled for a big Bungalow in New Delhi. Teen Murti house, in which the first Prime Minister J.L. Nehru lived, was converted in to Nehru Library and memorial. His successor, Lal Bahadur Shashri was allotted a house at Janpath. He was Prime Minister for a short period. After his death, his widow and sons refused to vacate the Prime Minister residence. After few years, it was converted into Shashtri Memorial. His successor Mrs. Indira Gandhi died in office. Charan Singh and Morarji Desai and Chandra Shekhar, former Prime Ministers are not amidst us. Rajiv Gandhi’s widow Sonia Gandhi too enjoyed the government accommodation.

Even Priyanka Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, now the first term Lok Sabha member, live in government palatial bungalows in New Delhi. Chandra Shekhar’s son, now a first-time member of the Lok Sabha, has not vacated the house. Ajit Singh, son of Charan Singh, a former Minister and a sitting Lok Sabha member of several terms lives in a palatial Bungalow. Vishwanath Pratap Singh, who claimed to be a fighter for the social equality, had an allotted bungalow in Delhi as he was a former Prime Minister, and another palatial bungalow in Lucknow as he was a Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, has died recently. His only son has not cared to vacate any of the bungalows. H.D. Deve Gowda, I.K. Gujral both enjoys the environs of big bungalows at the cost of state exchequer as they are the former prime ministers. In fact, it is a great loot.
