Call it romantic; call it crazy; or what you will. The Osbournes have come up with a ‘suicide pact’. Not coming into effect till 2012, this mutual decision basically states that they wish to die together in the event of either of them ever contracting a neurodegenerative disease.
Admitting that, the hasty decline of her father’s health and his eventual death due to Alzheimer’s disease as the inspiration for the birth of this pact, Sharon Osbourne says that they want to spare themselves and their kids the horror, anguish, and the burden of the illness.
Sharon’s father, Don Arden – the legendary band manager, lost his life to Alzheimer’s disease after struggling for five years. Recalling the rapid deterioration of her father’s health, she said that her father was reduced to a shell of himself.
Fearing that the disease is hereditary, she has made it clear to her children and lawyers, that she does not want to endure the misery and doesn’t wish to continue living if ever diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease or if her mental health were ever hit.
The Osbournes have decided to go to the assisted suicide flat in Switzerland, should anything like this ever happen to them. Considering this as their final gift of love to their children, she said that their kids – Aimee, Kelly and Jack – perfectly understand their parents’ reasons for taking such a step.
They gathered their kids around the kitchen table and told them about this ‘pact’, and the kids were totally supportive about it. They have also asked their lawyers to make the necessary arrangements.
