Underworld haunting Bollywood again

With the Supreme Court upholding the conviction of Sanjay Dutt in the 1993 Mumbai blasts, the superstar will have to undergo a jail term of three years and six months. The blasts that ripped apart Mumabi were said to be the brainchild of Dawood Ibrahim and had the active support of ISI.

The court in its observation has ruled out releasing the star on probation, as the nature of charges against him were very severe. Sanjay had already served one and half year in jail and was out on bail. The bollywood superstar was convicted for possession of 9 mm pistol and AK 56 rifle, which supposedly were part of a consignment that was brought to the country as a part of weaponry used for the blasts that killed over 257 people and injured over 700 people.

This current verdict of the court has highlighted the connection that exists between bollywood and the underworld. Though bollywood has always been in a denial mode over the underworld’s involvement in its operations but proofs of underworld’s involvement have always been highlighted by security agencies. The arrest of Abu Salem and his admission of the fact that he has been involved with extortion racket in bollywood is an ample proof of the degradation that has crept into our system.

By Sanjay’s admission, he had taken the arms from Abu Salem for protection of his family from underworld threats. However, the statement did not hold much weight with the security agencies and court and it eventually ruled against the bollywood star.

The court has reduced his six-year sentence to five years under the provisions of arms act. The bollywood star has been directed to report within four weeks. However, despite anger brewing in the bollywood faternity, Sanjay Dutt has reacted calmly to the conviction and has reportedly told his lawyer Satish Maneshinde that he is ready to face the sentence and will report within the stipulated time.

However, the lawyer pointed out that they will explore all the options available including filing an review petition and if the court still rules against Sanjay they are ready to face the law.

Bollywood has always been in news for wrong reasons and number of producers have even been killed. Some instances of movies being produced at behest of the underworld have also been detected. However, whatsoever may the truth be, it is obvious that despite movie stars wanting to maintain a distance from those in the underworld, things do not go as they desire.

The conviction of Sanjay Dutt in the 1993 bomb blast case is a live example of this fact. The star will now have to head to the prison where he had already spend one and half years before being released on bail in 2010. Besides Sanjay Dutt, bollywood producers Samir Hingora and Hanif Kadawala were also convicted for the crime and are already serving jail terms.

Meanwhile opposition parties have another point to score as Priya Dutt, the sister of Sanjay Dutt is a Congress MP from Mumbai. Whatsoever may be the outcome of all this episode one thing that comes out aptly is that tough days are in offering for Bollywood in general and Sanjay Dut in particular?
