There are plenty of reasons why romantic comedies are always popular, audiences always seem to enjoy how the main characters are always successful in over coming all obstacles so that they can find solace in the arms of one another. One can only assume that the ardor that is free form cynicism touches heart of all viewers.

Romance has always been a favorite formulas for the many film makers in Hollywood; even if the face of this beloved component has changed to suit the tastes of a more contemporary audience.

Last year proved to be good for this genre as we saw the likes of Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, Aashiqui 2 and Raanjhanaa. This year, we have the Vikramaditya Motwane’s Lootera- which as you have guessed it – is a romantic comedy, so we can safely say that Bollywood has been hit by Cupid’s arrow.

Another reason why these films are best sellers is because there is something for everything for the whole family, more importantly; they are targeted at a younger audience who are eager to go to cinemas to watch the films.

While Bollywood has it classics like Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge, Maine Pyaar Kiya, Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam that had basically made the careers of many of the more established stars in Bollywood that include big names lik Amir Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Aishwariya Rai.

Today we have films that have a very contemporary storyline that is unlike those of classic Bollywood like Jab We Met- which is the tale of feisty Geet who falls for Aditya after they met on board a train. The honesty of the story line and the chemistry between Kareena Kapoor and Shahid Kapoor appealed to many film buffs.

This film was the start of many films with modern love stories with the ‘old wine in a new bottle’ twist to it. Modern audiences find that the story lines of classic Bollywood romantic comedies tend to be very cheesy and also unrealistic at times. So the way in which romantic comedies were made had to be changed to appeal to this new taste.
