Joe McElderry, the X Factor champ who hit bullseye with his single The Climb, has revealed he is gay. Though rumors and speculations about his sexuality started to emerge as soon as he won the X Factor in December last year, the 19-year-old credits the message posted by a hacker on his Twitter page – “It’s been difficult living a lie for so many years” – as the real driving force behind his bold decision to come out of the closet.
The Sun quotes him as saying,
I was really angry at first – thinking, ‘How dare they hack me’? But after a while I looked at the message and thought, ‘Well, they’re not that far from the truth’. I think the Twitter thing was the point when I realised I was gay. I just looked at it and thought, ‘Should I be more bothered about this’? Because I wasn’t, that’s when it clicked and I thought maybe I was. It was a turning point, definitely.
I’m really amazed at the power of Twitter. If you arrange the happenings in a sequence, then you are left with just one clear conclusion – Twitter transformed Joe into a gay! Either this, or that message was posted by Joe himself, who later got petrified and chalked the hacking drama to wriggle out of the emotionally trying situation. Anyway, here’s a big congratulations to Joe for embracing his true self.
