Carrying her adopted son in her arms, Madonna jetted out of Malawi on Sunday after a six-day long visit to the homeland of the toddler.

Madonna and film producer husband Guy Ritchie, adopted David Banda last October. However, the adoption faced a lot of criticism with rumors that the 48-year-old pop star misused her celebrity status to ease the strict Malawian adoption laws.

The star with her biological daughter Lourdes and her entourage spent their time visiting orphanages, welfare projects for street children and agricultural development programs. Madonna is opening a new day care center funded by her charity, Raising Malawi.

Madonna, who lives in London, also visited the Home of Hope orphanage, from where she adopted David, who was abandoned by his peasant father saying that he couldn’t afford the upbringing of the baby boy. It was not clear if David was given any time alone with his father Yohane Banda, who lost his wife in childbirth.

Although human rights group criticize the adoption which they say challenged the legal adoption procedure, the locals are elated that the celebrity has drawn attention to Malawi, which generally comes to news for reasons such as drought, hunger and the occasional political scandal.
