Channel 4 to air sting operation on data selling in Indian BPO

Is the Indian BPO industry in danger? The UK-based broadcaster Channel 4 has planned to air a sting operation on October 5 on the data theft scandal going on in Indian outsourcing industry.

The sting operation, named as ‘The Data Theft Scandal’ would supposedly show how two Indian people have sold the important personal and confidential financial information of UK citizens. They said to be obtained the data from various call centers working in India.

The website of The Sunday Times has the detail of the Indian middlemen who are said to offering details of credit card numbers, passport and driving license details of the UK citizens to the highest bidders.

In India, Star News will telecast the sting operation. The Times of India has reported the statement of a leading data protection lawyer Stewart Room who said that some of Indian BPO employees were ready to sell the details for £5 only. He said that the evidence is so convincing that it would create a rage against outsourcing to India.

On the other hand, NASSCOM Chief Kiran Karnik has said that this is all happening to project India as unsafe destination for outsource work. He is saying about a big conspiracy against India outsource industry.

NASSCOM has also asked Channel 4 to provide it with details of the allegations it plans to air along with the evidence.
