Dakshina Kannada Superintendent of Police Runs a Blog

Giving fillip to the Karnataka government’s policy of e-governance, a computer-savvy Superintendent of Police of the Dakshina Kannada district, B Dayananda, has launched a blog, SPDK. The blog is aimed at keeping both media and people informed about the latest developments in the district.

A close look suggests that although this blog is basically an outcome of personal initiative, it covers all the official news relevant for the masses. The blog is serving well as a medium to disseminate information on the recent findings and criminal cases. Some of the news covered in the blog include busting of drug rackets and a systematic coverage of the panchayat polls held recently. The blog features both English and Kannada fonts, so as to make it more user-friendly.

Talking about the making of this blog, Dayananda says, “I created the blog and showed it to a few journalist friends here and with their feedback made some more changes before launching it officially.” He informs that initially, the idea was to cut the time and resources involved in briefing the media about various cases and developments. “The routine process followed in issuing press releases is cumbersome. Drafting, taking printouts and assigning one motorcycle rider to drop these at newspaper offices becomes a hell of a job. Now with the advent of new technology, we can reach everyone simultaneously…even relevant photos are published on the blog,” Dayananda adds.

However, the best part is the good response from the public. With fast increase in the number of computer-savvy people, one can look forward to such officially-personal blogs in the near future.
