Whenever the popular elections come, Dalit leaders come out from their mansions and say that they are the real well-wishers of Dalits in India. However, no Dalit leaders came forward to appeal the angry people of the dalit community to be calm.

The dalits of Maharashtra became violent during protest in several parts of Maharashtra. They were protesting over a report of vandalism of Ambedkar’s statue in Kanpur UP.

Dalits, often named as ‘Harijan’ by Mahatma Gandhi, have become now leaderless community. After Gandhi, the word ‘Harijan’ word has been lost in Indian politics.

In the last seventy years, Dalits had three great leaders who made them conscious of their rights in India’s caste-ridden society. They were Dr Bhimarao Ambedkar, Babu Jagjivan Ram and Kanshi Ram.

No body is here now to say dalits, that education only, not agitation, may help them to have better living conditions. The greater access to knowledge innovative technology and the inevitable social revolution will help them not the setting up of Ambedkar busts in gardens and public places as Mayavati has done in UP.

Dalits in Maharashtra are comparatively better educated and very radicalized but they have no leader such as Mayawati. The Dalit leadership in Maharashtra is divided and weak.

They did not do anything to stop the violence and that left angry youth to just take the law into their own hands.

This is not only the Kanpur incident. This may be called as the reaction of the Khairlanji incident. Dalits in India are on fire when India is going to pay tributes to Ambedkar on his 50th death anniversary on December 6.

During the protest on Thursday, more than 60 people including 45 policemen became injured in the stone pelting. Angry people damaged more than 100 buses in the state.

According to DGP P S Pasricha, more than 1,500 people have been arrested from several places in the state. DGP also had called a meeting with heads of the news channels and to not to show the shots of violence.
