Death toll in Bihar floods has risen to 400, with life remaining disrupted in the state. Floods have hit the eastern states of India very hard.

Bihar, one of the most populated states in India is always at the receiving end when it comes to floods. Quite often in every monsoon season, Bihar dots headlines for incessant monsoon rains and flooding. Not only this, every year the state losses several lives, thanks to frequent flooding and inadequate facilities. More so, the whole landscape including crops, natural habitats, infrastructure of Bihar stands in peril every monsoon season. And what to talk about damage to houses, trees and animals, everything stands at needle’s edge.

Governments come and go in Bihar without paying heed to the cries and haplessness of the people who are always at the brink of submerging under floodwaters. Infrastructure is so poor that it bears the brunt every monsoon season. More so, neither the government awakes to address the issue nor it manages any kind of disaster management programs especially when the state is so vulnerable to flooding.

flood victims rush for relief

So many lives are lost every year in India due to flooding especially in Bihar, UP, Gujarat. Such a state of affairs calls for attention from the state government that witnesses the entire tragic drama and depravity of its people from its cozy drawing rooms. Or most of the times, administration is busy in gallopping relief amount meant for flood victims. What a pity!

What else other than looting should the people do when they don’t have access to essential daily items viz, food to eat, water to drink, shelter to live in, amidst inundation? Flood relief either never reaches them or if it does reach, it is never adequate.

The collateral damage this time is worth thousand crores. The loss of lives stand at 408, with the number increasing day by day. Is it what Bihar deserves? Is it what the poor people of the state deserve? Will Bihar ever have a damage-free monsoon season? For that the state government needs to awake to the misery of its people.
