Indian politicians are usually considered incredibly smart in possessing the power of words. They go on to capture the entire arena merely by their free flowing and witty verbal ammunition. However, they fail miserably at times. They speak some of the dumbest words out of which any possible meaning becomes quite difficult to construct. Let’s review some of the dumbest ever comments made by Indian politicians.

Varun Gandhi: Cut off the hand

Party: Bharatiya Janata Party

Young BJP National Executive, Varun Gandhi, found himself in the midst of a controversy when he was arrested for allegedly taunting the Islamic tradition of circumcision and also dubbed a Muslim rival as Osama bin Laden. It is also alleged that he vowed to cut off the hand of those Muslims who would even dare to threat a Hindu. Though, BJP president Rajnath Singh and Varun Gandhi himself, denied the accusations as false and misleading, the latter was arrested and was sent behind bars.

Mulayam Singh Yadav: Ban English and Computers

Party: Samajwadi Party

Samajwadi Party Chief Mulayam Singh Yadav, cudn’t get dumber than this. In a bid to invoke feelings of nationalism amongst masses, he went on to ask a ban for English language and computers. He believes that banning English would pave way for better promotion of Hindi and banning computers will generate employment for skilled laborers. Whatever may have been his intentions, the concept of ‘sticking to roots’ simply refused to go down by the throat of the masses.

Ghulam Nabi Azad: Homosexuality is a disease

Party: Indian National Congress

Nothing can get dumber than this. Ghulam Nabi Azad, the Indian Health Minister asserts homosexuality as a disease. Although, doctors around the world have failed to arrive at such definite conclusion regarding this, Mr. Azad claims homosexuality as ‘unnatural and not good for India’.

Baba Ramdev: I can cure Homosexuality

Bearing resemblance to what Ghulam Nabi Azad said, Yoga Guru and budding politican Baba Ramdev went on to claim that he has a cure for homosexuality. No one doubts, the wonder his Yoga works in curing several ailments and diseases. But how many people would believe that Yoga can cure homosexuality? Ramdev is also keen on challenging the Delhi High Court’s decision of legalizing gay sex between two consenting adults.

Bal Thackeray: Ek Bihari, Sau Bimari

Shiv Sena chief, Bal Thackeray, a hardcore Maratha Hindu nationalist contributed to some of the biggest controversies in Indian politics. Known for his hatred of Muslims and non Marathis, he uttered the dumbest ever comment on March 6 2008, in one of his editorial penned under the title ‘Ek Bihari, Sau Bihari’ which literally translates to ‘One Bihari is equal to hundred maladies’. It triggered a major controversy and hatred among North Indian community, residing in Mumbai and throughout India.

Kapil Sibal: Censoring Internet

Party: Indian National Congress

The immaculate intelligence of Kabil Sibal as a lawyer catapulted him to the position of Minister of Communication and Information Technology. No one might question his prowess and capabilities, but his statements reduced him into a butt of ridicule. His call to ‘Censor Internet’ triggered a mass outcry and lambasted his credentials. This was arguably one of the dumbest comments from a minister who spoke of censoring the popular mode of communication.

Raosaheb Ramrao Patil: Small incidents like this happen in big cities

When the entire nation was boiling post 26/11 terror attack on Mumbai, the then Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra, R.R Patil described the incident as a trivial one. He remarked such small incident can happen in a big city like Mumbai. It was quite difficult to sneak through what Mr. Patil actually meant to say. But such an insensitive statement during hours of adversity resulted in widespread criticism and he eventually had to resign from his position.

General Secretary of All India Congress Committee, Digvijay Singh’s comment about the slain Al-Qaeda chief and world’s deadest terrorist Osama Bin Laden, sparked immediate controversy. Digvijay Singh addressed Osama Bin Laden as ‘Osama ji’ which made several people think of the reason that made Mr. Singh showing reverence towards the world’s most notorious terrorist. Digvijay, however was quick to back off from his comment. He said, he made a sarcastic statement and everyone failed to grasp the underlying tone of what he said. Whatever he meant, he grabbed some immediate spotlight and attention for his ‘pun’ than what he achieved as a political leader.

Rahul Gandhi: Difficult to stop every single terror attack

Youth icon and General Secretary of Indian National Congress, Rahul Gandhi, found himself on the backfoot following his comment on 13th July 2011, Mumbai Terror Attacks. His statement ‘it was very difficult to stop every single terror attack’ generated a strong wave of criticism among people across the nation. His immature and insensible comment raised several questions on his potential as a true leader.
