Government cancels organ transplant licences of Chennai hospitals

The Government of Tamil Nadu has canceled the licenses of two Chennai hospitals for their involvement in illegal organ transplants. Answering to a call attention motion raised in the Tamil Nadu assembly, the state health minister K.K.S.S.R. Ramachandran informed the house about the revocation of their permits for blatant violation of the Transplant of Human Organ Act, 1994.

The government terminated the authorizations of M.R. Hospitals and Aswini Soundaraya, both in Chennai after being implicated in the cases of unlawful organ implementation. The authorities in these two hospitals were found guilty of forging orders by clients and signatures of the approval committee members for kidney transplantation. They also misused the license by allowing persons other than the relatives to donate their kidneys on false order. The government ordering a high level inquiry seeking to discover if any illegal trade of human organs is involved.

The state health minister told the house that 54 hospitals in the state had been given licenses to transplant human organs. Out of them 49 were private ones. The list includes star hospitals based in Chennai, Madurai and Tirunelveli. The minister also promised stringent action against hospitals for violating the 1994 Transplant of Human Organ Act.
