Indian Railway has planned to introduce a quota for woman above 45 years and pregnant women to make railway traveling comfortable for them. According to the report, pregnant women, women above 45 years and senior citizens will be able to get two lower berths per coach in AC 3, AC 2 and sleeper class in trains, if they are traveling without anyone with them.
The Indian railway is going to implement the quota on experimental basis from August 1 this year initially for six months. It will be applicable in the trains that will have reserved accommodation facilities. Presently, the officials are looking on the various negative and positive aspects of the proposed quota for women and senior citizens.
Report says that railway department would take any final decision on it only after evaluating the plan. The evaluation process would start after three months of the implementation of this plan.
The report says further that the quota will be available for booking till the preparation of passengers list before the departure of the train. In case of un-utilization of the quota, the berths will be given to the wait-listed passengers.
For this, there would be some changes in the Railway Requisition Form to enable pregnant women to register in the quota. The women will have to show a certificate of pregnancy at the time of booking tickets. The certificates should be certified by a registered medical practitioner.
