Kerala, the God’s Own Country, is the southernmost state of India, which is known for its pristine backwaters and luscious greenery. Being one of the top tourist destinations in India that is home to the world’s richest temple, Kerala has been the pioneer for many times in many things in the country.

First state to attain 100% literacy

Kerala is the first state that attained 100% literacy in India, and it achieved this in 1991. Thanks to various programs run by the state government which helped people and students to get classes and education, Kerala still holds one of the top positions in literacy rate.

First state to get 100% primary education
Kerala is the first state in the country to achieve 100% primary education, thanks to the government for coming up with ‘Athulyam’ program. Through this program, the government made sure that everyone got their education equivalent of plus two levels.

First in the Country to declare Internet as a Human Right
Kerala has declared internet as a human right and doing so it became the first in the country. The government has proposed plans to provide almost 20 lakh people with free or low cost internet services. Broadband services are available even in Kerala’s villages.

First state to have highest female to male sex ratio
Kerala was declared as the state with highest female to male ratio, as per a survey in 2011. The ratio is said to be even higher than the national index. Sex ratio of Kerala is 1084 females over 1000 males. Women rule, literally.

First in the country to bring down Infant Mortality Rate
Kerala is the first and only state that has brought down IMR to the lowest, 6 per 1000. This means it has almost met the UN standards and is in competition with The US.

First digital state in the country
President Pranab Mukherjee declared Kerala as the first Digital State in the country on 2016. This is achieved by the 100% mobile connectivity and 75% internet literacy throughout the state.

The first in country to have a complete yoga village

India is the birthplace of Yoga, but people in Kunnamthanam village in Kerala are the first in the country which has made it an integral part of their lives. This village is known as the first and only ‘Yoga Village’ in India.

First state to have a transgender policy
The state launched its transgender policy in 2015. This policy ensures transgender gets their constitutional rights as per the Supreme Court judgment in 2014. The policy covers all TGs to get freedom, social and economic opportunities.

In 2013, UN declared Kerala as the first and the only state in the country that excels in all areas of Human Development index, including education, life expectancy and per capita income.

First to go totally cashless after demonetization
Malappuram district in Kerala is the first in the country which have achieved this after the population learned to use mobile transactions. Every family is trained to do mobile banking and online transactions, again thanks to literacy and digital knowledge.

First to open a school for transgender community

After the well appreciated transgender policy, Kerala is the only place in the country which has a school for transgender community. ‘Sahaj’ school in collaboration with NIOS will take in transgender students and also helps the TG dropouts to continue their studies.
Along with these achievements, Kerala is also known for being the state with the lowest corruption rates in the country and the highest media coverage. This small state is doing wonders and setting examples for the country to follow.
