Jay Leno ‘gay’ brouhaha: Society still doesn’t accept gays

Homosexuality has a long way to go before it is accepted in the United States. I mean if distinguished TV personalities like Jay Leno have problems accepting it, then forget about the common folks.

When some one does not like something, he/she either turns hostile towards it or makes fun of it. That is human psychology. That is exactly what Jay leno did about homosexuality. He made funny cracks about it. It happened during a recent interview with Ryan Phillippe, who has played the first gay character on daytime television. Leno told Philippe to imagine the camera was a gay partner and told him to give “gayest” look. The actor squirmed in his seat but did not oblige.

Leno’s bad luck was that openly gay Jeff Whitty, who penned the Tony-winning Broadway play Avenue Q, happened to be in the audience. He had hauled Leno over the coals two years ago for making wisecracks about gays. After being lambasted by gay rights groups Leno has sheepishly apologized.

But the fact remains that gays are still not accepted even in ultra-liberal societies like that of America. Jay Leno made ‘funny’ remarks about gays because he knew it would get him quite a few chuckles from his audience. Remember what I said about one making fun of things one does not like or cannot accept?
