JNU bans Orkut

jnu orkut banned

The incident of misusing Google’s social networking site Orkut has come again in news. A Jawaharlal Nehru University scholar has filed a complaint with the Delhi Police against the networking site on Friday. He lodged a complain and stated that somebody has created a social community page on orkut and linked him with several other women of the university.

He said:

JNU is a small place where everyone knows each other. It has put the girls and me in a very embarrassing position.

This is not a new case against the social networking site as an airhostess had earlier lodged an FIR that someone had made her profile in orkut as a ‘sex-struck woman’.

In this year only, the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) in the Delhi Police headquarter has received at least 35 complaints against the site. DCP (EOW) Prabhakar said that the wing has already registered six cases against the networking site.

Joint CP (Crime) Alok Kumar Verma said that the sites were being used to settle personal scores and defame people. People created most such profiles at cyber cafes and we faced problems to identify the culprit behind the acts. After this complain, JNU’s Chief Proctor HB Bohidar ordered to ban Orkut in JNU.
