A new twist has been added to the row over Hollywood star Liz Hurley and her new husband Arun Nayar wedding. Yesterday it was reported that newlyweds Hurley and Nayar have been disowned by groom’s parents following their ‘shabby’ behavior at their lavish, magazine-financed weeklong wedding last month. It has now emerged that the newlywed couple faces a three year jail term for breaching Hindu custom.

A legal case has been initiated against Liz and Nayar on the ground that their marriage in Rajasthan broke with Hindu customs.

The case against the newlyweds was filed on a complaint by one Vishnu Khandelwal who alleged that the couple has ‘defamed’ the traditional marriage system of the Hindus and it has ‘hurt the sentiments’ of the entire community.

And the wedding pictures British beauty sold to Hello! Magazine for $5 million might be used as a evidence against the couple, combined with evidence from her new father-in-law, Vinod Nayar.

Among the allegation are:

Liz Hurley refused to remove her shoes when they arrived at the marriage mandap (marriage place).

Liz and Nayar both drank alcohol.

Liz showed too much of her flesh.

Liz and Arun had their picture taken kissing that is against Hindu custom.

The Daily Mail quoted prosecuting lawyer H.M. Saraswat as saying Tuesday,

An arrest warrant could be issued for Arun and Liz as soon as the prosecution has made its case – either because they are summoned to give evidence or they have been found guilty.

He (Vinod) contacted me and wants to get some help regarding this case. He wants to disclose some important facts. Vinod Nayar told me that when Arun Nayar and Liz Hurley came to the marriage mandap (marriage place), Arun Nayar left his footwear outside the mandap but Liz Hurley refused to remove her footwear.

When we worship we just remove our shoes because we pray to God and at that time shoes should be removed.

Our intention is to prove that the procedures adopted by both the accused for their marriage is against our Hindu rites.

The pair have been charged with an intention to outrage the feelings of Hindus by insulting their religious and ritualistic beliefs under section 295 A of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). And if found guilty Liz and Nayar could face jail up to three years and could face unlimited fine also.
