I believe Mumbaikars are not willing to stop and help people in trouble.

The husband of one of the women, who was molested by a group of men outside JW Marriott Hotel on New Year day, said it to a city tabloid in Mumbai. This is the new face of not only Mumbai but also the face of urban India as well.

The woman’s husband narrated the whole trauma he and his wife and cousin relatives faced on the very first hours of the New Year. He described how around 50 people tried to get at his wife and cousin. How the rowdy crowd pinched and groped both the NRI women.

One of the NRI women said in an interview:

After coming out of JW Marriot, we moved forward to cross the street. It started all of a sudden. Initially I didn’t make it a big deal about it but my cousin did not appreciate it. Then more people started gathering around us. My brother and my husband did everything possible to push people away.

She further said:

My clothes weren’t ripped and I wasn’t raped. We were just harassed. They touched my butt and pinched me. They also began grabbing my cousin sister-in-law. People just watched as my husband tried to protect me. A gentleman arrived in the scene and put us in the cop car and took us to the police station. I just want to get over the horror. I want to stop seeing my face on TV now.

Her husband recalled:

The crowd reached us and started grabbing my wife. Since we were walking against the crowd it was difficult to move ahead. But then it got worse. It seemed like the whole crowd was on my wife and my cousin. Then somebody pushed all of us on the ground. It seemed like they were 50 people around…all trying to get at my wife and cousin. That’s when some photographers started clicking us.

The couple is based in California. They had got married just a day before the terrible incident. The couple finally thanked the man in the red T-shirt who helped them.
