National Crime Records says Delhi unsafe for women

Delhi is the most unsafe place for women. The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) has come out with a report ‘Crime in India manual for 2005’ that reveals again that Delhi has the highest rate of crime against women i.e. 27.6 per lakh population. However, the national average is 14.2 per lakh population of women.

Delhi has the highest percentage of crimes against women in comparison with 35 big cities with population of above 10 lakh.

562 cases out of 1,693 rape cases or one-third of total rape cases are registered in Delhi alone.

900 cases of kidnapping and abductions of women out of 2,409 registered in Delhi that stands on about 37.4 per cent of national rate.

Delhi registered 654 incidents of molestation which is highest in India, whether Mumbai is at the second place with 385 cases.

Delhi accounted for 94 of the 492 countrywide dowry deaths that stand on about 19 per cent.

Delhi is at the second place when considering sexual harassment with 197 cases. Kanpur has got the top place with 227 cases.

S Awasthi, National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) Director, said that the countrywide crime rate has gone from 168.8 in 2004 to 165.3 in 2005. But the report revealed that crime against women is rising on an alarming trend in Delhi
