For someone who was as inseparable from the bottle as its label, it’s no mean achievement to shun drinking for 10 months. Hollywood actor Robin Williams has done just that and the comedy king also had the heart to make fun of it.

Williams had announced in August last year that he was undergoing treatment for alcohol abuse after he found himself drinking heavily after two decades of restraint.

On his arrival at the San Francisco International Film Festival, Williams disclosed his 10 months of sobriety.

He said

I had 20 years before that. It’s nice to know there are others out there, including the mayor.

His reference was to San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom who is undergoing similar treatment.

Williams, the star of movies including ‘Mrs Doubtfire’, said the most difficult part of it is to admit having this problem.

He said

Honesty is the best thing and he did it great in dealing with it. That’s the hardest thing of all, admitting ‘I have a problem.

The actor, who got the San Francisco Film Society’s Peter Owens award, displayed his razor-sharp wit at the black-tie dinner.

He quipped It’s a great honour to be honoured by a festival sponsored by a vodka company. Just out of rehab, it’s always good to go right to a place with a bottle of Skyy on every table.
