Recently, Salman Rushdie, Emma Kirby and Peter Sallis have been awarded the English Knighthood. This is one of the greatest honors someone could get in England.
Even though Salman Rushdie faces the Fatwa, and tries to live carefully with the huge price on his head, he still manages to write and mingle with his fans.
The 59 year old writer was made to run away after he published The Satanic Verses. This book is considered a blasphemy against Islam by Iranians. A personal interview at a campus meeting with Rushdie revealed the easily approachable social man in him.
When I asked for advice, he said,
Think about people when you write.
Sir Rushdie expresses his humility after getting the honor:
I am thrilled and humbled to receive this great honour, and am very grateful that my work has been recognised in this way
Along with Rushdie, Emma Kirby was also awarded Knighthood. The singer Kirby was awarded for her excellence in entertainment. She was joined by her tenor and soprano for the award ceremony.
Besides Salman Rushdie and Emma Kirby, yet another prominent figure selected for the great honor was Peter Sallis.
Peter Sallis is a well known actor who acted in shows like Sitcoms Last of The Summer Wine.
Peter is a big fan of Cheese. However, in an attempt to celebrate his knighthood Peter discards cheese and wishes to celebrate without his developed taste.
I’m quite hungry so I’ll be going out to get something to eat, but no, I won’t be having cheese
The already popular stars were extremely delighted to receive this honor. I think this is a great way to honor people. Although, Rabindranath Tagore might disagree with me if he was alive. Tagore had rejected the honor once. This is to put an Indian perspective on the honor.
