Twelve animated films get Oscar 2008 nod

Here is some exciting news for toon lovers! The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) unveiled the list of animated movies that would be competing for 2008 Oscars, on Thursday, November 8, 2007.

For the 80th Academy Awards twelve films will compete for Academy Awards’ Best Animated Feature title. As this time less than 16 films (12) could make to nominations therefore three will be only making their way to Oscar ballot. Tradition has that 16 films are nominated from which then 5 make to Oscar ballots.

The winning films will than be revealed with other nominations on Jan. 22.

The list of films that has made into nominations is as follow:

1. Disney/Pixar’s- Ratatouille

2. Sony Pictures Animation’s-Surf’s Up

3. 20th Century Fox’s -The Simpsons Movie

4. DreamWorks Animation’s-Shrek the Third

5. Bee Movie

6. Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters

7. Meet the Robinsons

8. Tekkonkinkreet

9. TMNT

10. Alvin and the Chipmunks

11. Beowulf

12. Persepolis

DreamWorks-Paramount coproduction film Bee Movie holds better chances to win the award as it opened last weekend with $38 million and possibly will keep doing well being a holiday movie season.

Apart from Bee Movie, Ratatouille, a computer-animated wonder also seems will make for the promising award as it has grossed $580 million worldwide and is a direction by Incredibles Oscar winner Brad Bird. Even one can’t ignore The Simpson Movie and Shrek the Third, which have collected $525 million and $793 million globally, respectively.

Whereas Angelina Jolie animated film Beowulf is quite uncertain to be classified as an animated film as Oscar reserves the right to revoke eligibility of a film if it fails meet all criteria.
