Union cabinet gives green signal for Indira Gandhi National Tribal University in MP

The Union Cabinet has given the green signal to establish a unique central university, Indira Gandhi National Tribal University, which will be first of its kind in India. The proposal was placed during the meeting of union cabinet on Friday and the cabinet given its nod for the new central university.

The University will be set up by an Act of Parliament. It will be located in Amarkantak district of Madhya Pradesh. The university will provide and fulfill the specific educational needs of the tribal population of Madhya Pradesh and the adjoining states such as Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Orissa, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Gujarat.

The university like any other central university will have the power of affiliation to other institutions. The government has decided to establish such university only to promote studies and research in tribal art, culture, tradition, language, customs, and medicinal systems.

The university will have the departments for forest-based economic activities including special studies in flora and fauna. There will be a separate department for the advancements in technologies relating to natural resources in the tribal areas.

The university will have the power to open its own regional centres in other tribal region. The government has planned to open one school in every regional centre just to serve as a model for the other schools of the tribal region.
