The government of India has decided to start the Sethusamudram Ship Canal Project near Rameshwaram. However, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) has given a warning to the central government to change the present position of the Ship Canal project before May 13.

The VHP has threatened to launch a nation-wide agitation, if the government fails to do so. The VHP has said that the ship project would destroy the Ram Sethu or Adams Bridge located in the Palk Straits.

The VHP organized a religious demonstration in the holy island and said that the organization is determined to protect the Ram Sethu. Around 1,500 devotes, including women too, participated in the demonstration.

VHP International President Ashok Singhal said that all the Hindu organisations and devotees would come together to protest against the government decision that may destroy Ram Sethu, one of the most important and holy monuments for the Hindus.

According to the report, the MPs and MLAs would be said to raise the issue in the Parliament and legislatures for the interest of Hindus.

Singhal later completely rejected the view that Ram sethu was not a human-built structure. He said that ram Sethu is not a natural structure. There are enough historical evidences even in government Administration reports, and Department of Earth Science’s and NASA’s report that this is a man-made structure

He criticized the central government that the government, on the suggestion of US, is now looking ready to make the Palk Strait as International waters. Presently, Palk Strait shared only by India and Sri Lanka and the site had more that 3.60 lakh tonnes of thorium in its water. It could be useful for India for generating power for another 100 years.
