Virginity-Faking In Egypt

In a recent post I wrote I described how sexually charged Arab society is:

Ammianus Marcellinus, the fourth-century Roman history, observed while traveling in Arabia about the Arabs “it is unbelievable with what ardour both sexes give themselves up to passion.”

Rabbi Nathan, one of the Talmud authors, “declared that nowhere in the world was there such a propensity towards fornication as among the Arabs, just as nowhere was there any power like that of Persia, or wealth like that of Rome, or magic like that of Egypt.” He “observed that, if all the sexual licence [sic] in the world were divided into ten parts, then nine of these would be distributed among the Arabs and the tenth would be enough for all other races.”

Islam tired to put rules around the sex lives of Arabs. Islam does not view sex the way Catholic dogma does through the lens of sex being a shameful act. Islam views sex liberally in that it is a pleasure to be enjoyed (there are no vows of celibacy) and both husband and wife must pleasure the other, but Islam put curbs on sex. Fornication is a sin, for instance.

But try as it might the Arabs are still sexually charged. And even more so as Arabs are marrying older and older. Past generations could get married in their early twenties if not before and could start enjoying sex, but with the urbanization of the Arab world and the emancipation of women whom want careers before marriage the age of marriage is being pushed back. High employment also pushes marriage back as young men simply do not have the resources to marry. Western assumptions that Arab and Muslim men are sexually frustrated are unfounded. Brothels proliferate the area. Sex, if one so desires, is easily available and affordable. Nonetheless, many couples putting off marriage are starting to have sex before their wedding night for tiring of waiting. This is increasingly common. If the couple eventually weds that is fine, but if there is a breakup the woman is out of luck. Most Muslim men will expect a virgin (unless, of course, she is a divorcee) and if a woman isn’t it can seriously undermine her chances of getting married.

This has lead to a new industry in the Arab world: re-virginification. Many Arab women whom sleep with their boyfriends and then break-up get such surgeries and then pretend to be virgins all along.

Naturally, religious cleric are opposed to such devices because the allow the sinful to get away with their misdeeds:

“A leading Egyptian scholar has demanded that people caught importing a female virginity-faking device into the country should face the death penalty.”

It would not surprise me if some of these clerics were themselves engaging in unseemly sex acts.
