To make the Holy River Ganga clean and to check the pollution in the river, the then Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi had launched the Ganga Action Plan in 1985.

However, the Ganga is still polluted despite of non-ending flow of money for the program.

Now, the Supreme Court has expressed its discontentment with the way the funds have been misutilized.

It said that nothing has reached to the implementation level. The situation of the River has become worse than what was in 1980s.

The Chief Justice of India KG Balakrishnan, who himself headed the bench, asked;

Where the money gone. All these money has been eaten away. These funds could have been easily used for the poor people.

Earlier, the Supreme Court had noted out in October last year that despite of providing more than Rs 900 crore for the implementation of the Ganga Action Plan, the polluted content going to the River continuously and unchecked. It is deteriorating water quality of the Holy River.

The court has also showed its irritation with the way the ministry of environment and forest (MoEF) responded in this matter. The CAG report had pointed out deficiencies on its part in the implementation of the plan at the ground level.

The CAG report said further that the MoEF had not done enough and necessary work to technically design the sewage treatment plan in the cities connecting with the River.

The Court has showed its concern over the matter and asked advocate Mr Krishan Mahajan, as amicus curiae, to the report on MoEF steps for implementing the plan.
