Unbelievably, the Godhra massacre that prompted the Gujarat riots in 2002 was an accident; at least that’s what the Justice UC Banerjee Banerjee found out.
He ruled that the fire in S-6 coach of the Sabarmati Express in Godhra was accidental. The fire in the train on February 27, 2002 sparked communal riots across Gujarat in which hundreds of people were killed.
However, the Modi-led BJP government in Gujarat has rejected the Bannerjee report. A separate inquiry into the Gujarat riots is yet to submit its conclusions.
With so much political interference into judicial commissions, such commissions have lost credibility, no matter even if it by a retired judge. However, only time will tell what the truth was that started one of the worst pogroms in recent times in India.
