Govt proposes heavy penalties on traffic violators to restrict road accidents

The government is planning to put heavy penalties on the bad drivers on the road. They will face tough time for the incidents of traffic violations such as speeding, driving without a license, without necessary papers and vehicle tampering. The ministry of road transport and highways has given an indication to penalize the traffic violators heavily to restrict the cases of road accidents in India.

For this, the ministry has proposed some amendments to the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 and the proposals are likely to come up in the Union cabinet soon.

The ministry has proposed the punishment for speeding from Rs 300-Rs 500 to a minimum of Rs 500 in case of first offence and to Rs 3,000 for subsequent offences.

The Drivers without necessary papers and licenses would be punished with a fine of Rs 2,000 or three months’ imprisonment or both. A senior ministry official said that the Act has been in place since 1988 and a need was felt to increase the penalty provisions in keeping with the times.

The ministry has also proposed to increase penalties for driving motor vehicles without registration. The penalty for the first offence would be of Rs 4,000 to a maximum of Rs 20,000. Presently, the fine for a first offence is from Rs 2,000 to Rs 5,000. The second offence results in one year’s imprisonment and a fine from Rs 5,000 to Rs 10,000.

According to a data, India places as third country in the ranking that has maximum number of motor vehicles. At the same time, India ranks second as far as the number of road accidents are concerned. The government of India has taken the increasing road accident cases seriously this time and proposed a bill to restrict it by penalizing the traffic violators heavily.
