India is a successful democratic country. Since its independence from the British colonial rule, it has established the democratic set up in the governance. People say on several occasions that good literacy rate is necessary for the smooth running of democracy in India. But, the people of India have been proved many times that illiteracy and the political understanding is very much different thing.

In the late 70s when half of the Indian population was not literate, they had given their strong electoral mandate against the functioning of Indira Gandhi government. Again, when the Janta party government failed to deliver what they had promised to the public, the same Indian people chose Indira Gandhi again to rule over India.

India has showed its passion for democracy all the time despite of surrounded by the countries those may be called as democratically failed countries. The continuous governance problem in neighboring countries has become a great anxiety for India.

Bangladesh is facing political instability and recently in Pakistan, a judicial crisis has triggered the nation as well as the Musharraf rule too.

The External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee has expressed his concerns on the challenges facing by India. He was giving speech at the Foreign Services Institute (FSI) in New Delhi. However, he did not name any of the country but clearly put India’s tough stand against the issues such as cross-border terrorism, nuclear proliferation and political instability.

Pranab said that India has been trapped in an arch of nuclear proliferators and the most dangerous part of the story is that those proliferators have some possible links with terrorists also.

To counter the spread of terrorism in the region is the priority of India’s foreign policy. In most part of the world, terrorism is being carried out by non-state actors but as far as growing terrorists activities in Indian sub-continent are concerned, those are being sponsored and aided by government agencies from across India’s borders.

India is greatly concerned about the political disturbance in neighboring countries. To develop the region and to make it free from terrorism, India is ready to develop friendly ties with its neighbors but it needs the same kind of return from the neighboring countries to establish peace.
