India is far behind from China in R&D sector

Here is another sector where we are lagging behind China – the Research and Development (R&D) sector.

During the second meeting of his Scientific Advisory Council, chaired by the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, the scientists have alarmed the PM that China is experiencing the dramatic increase in scientific research in China and India may be losing its edge over China.

The scientists need some developmental steps to be taken by Government of India in this field. An US study has revealed that the research output in China has increased more than 25 times in comparison with India’s progression. That is another field from where China is pushing India to lagging behind.

According to study, during last twenty-five years, the scientific papers of Chinese scientists published in quality journals increased by over 104 times. On the other hand, Indian scientific research publishing increased only by 2.3 times.

India spends about US$ 5 billion on R&D every year only that is 0.9 per cent of the GNP. While, China spends about 1.3 per cent of its GDP on R&D. China is planning to increase the spending to US$ 112 billion by 2020.

Forget China’s success story in research and development sector. Has India done well in this sector during last sixty years in real sense? We should concentrate first on the rate of development what India is maintaining. Then we should go for comparison with other countries.
