The Special Task Force (STF) of Uttar Pradesh police were attacked by the dreaded Thokia Dacoit gang and six of the STF jawans were killed in the gun battle. The incident happened near Kusumhia forest in Chitrakoot district on Sunday night.
The STF team was returning after the encounter with the Thokia gang on Sunday evening in which they killed some members of the Thokia gang including Shiv Kumar Patel alias Dadua. Dadua, who carried a reward of Rs 5 lakh on his head by state government.
He was believed to be associated with the Thokia gang. He was wanted in more than 200 cases of murder, kidnapping and extortion in states like UP and Madhya Pradesh.
The STF operation was called off due to darkness and the STF team was told to back and when the team was returning back, the Thokia gang reportedly attacked the team.
The STF team started firing on the gang members but lost six jawans in the gun battle. After killing them, the dacoit gang escaped from the place.
The STF team had recovered a semi-automatic American service rifle, 275-magnum rifle and several automatic weapons and a large quantity of ammunition from the site.
The bodies of the STF jawans have been brought to Banda for post-mortem. The Senior police officials, including the state DGP, have also reached the site of the encounter.
